What is Neurofeedback?

Simply put Neurofeedback is exercise for the brain.

Neurofeedback, also called EEG Biofeedback is a state-of-the-art, non-invasive, drugless method for teaching the brain to function in a more balanced and healthful way. It is a simple and pleasant learning modality that can help shift the way the brain produces and distributes its electrical energy. Four divisions of electrical impulses are made by our brain Delta, Theta, Alpha and Beta impulses are called “Frequency Bands”. These Frequency Bands tell us which parts of your brain are active.  Different frequency bands the brain should be active when completing a given task, activity or should be most active during different states of mind.

When the brain fails to produce the correct frequency bands for a particular task or activity, we call this brain wave dysregulation.  Neurofeedback works to teach the brain how to produce the correct frequency bands in order for optimal brain function.

Who can be helped by Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback can help such conditions as ADHD, Anxiety, Autism, Chronic pain, Depression, Insomnia, Learning Disorders, Memory Problems, Migraine Headaches and PTSD.  It has also been used in the treatment of concussion, as well as in improving mental and physical performance.  The treatment creates permanent changes in the brain that allows for more optimal function.

How do I know if I can benefit from neurofeedback?

There are several factors that influence how a person responds to care.  This is why we perform a comprehensive evaluation that includes making sure we understand the nature of your concern, why you want improvement and how much you are willing to do to get the results you want, along with  a qEEG brain map,. The brain map allows us to read the frequency of areas across the brain. Much like a weather map that shows high and low temperatures, this map will show brain frequency and which areas may be over or under signaling and may be contributing to symptoms within the body.

How is Neurofeedback done?

The information from the qEEG is correlated with a questionnaire outlining your concerns and specific protocols for correction are then recommended based upon your specific areas of imbalance.  The neurofeedback training is done by placing sensors on your head that read the current state of your frequency bands.  Your custom protocol is set on the computer.  While you are listening to sounds, playing a game or watching a movie, the computer senses if your frequency bands are within the range desired and lets you know by changing the tones you are hearing, helping you play the game or by making the movie brighter.  Basically, when an imbalance is detected and neurofeedback is performed, brainwave frequencies are optimized for improved function, health and wellbeing.  In this way, you are exercising your brain.  Nothing is put in through the electrodes, they are only sensing what is going on in order to help you achieve optimal brain function.
